Trove Tuesday - Elizabeth Mulholland (nee McWilliams)

I recently started writing again about my family history research.

Today I am focussing my attention on my great grandmother Elizabeth McWilliams.

Eliza Anne McWilliams was born on 3rd March, 1868 near Ballymena, at Aughaboy, Drummaul, County Antrim, Ireland. She married my great grandfather John Mulholland on 23rd December 1895 at St Anne's, Church of Ireland, Belfast.

Elizabeth and John had three children:

  • an infant female born 22nd October 1896  who unfortunately passed away 36 hours later on 24th October 1896 and is buried in the Public Grounds, Belfast City Cemetery, Falls Road, Belfast
  • my grandfather Joseph Cecil Mulholland born 4th September 1897 and
  • his brother William Geoffrey Mulholland born 11th July 1899.

Elizabeth, John, and their two sons Joseph Cecil and William Geoffrey Mulholland arrived in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia aboard the Hororata on 11th August 1921.

When I searched within Trove for "Elizabeth Mulholland" , many search results appeared, however, only two of the results are actually about my great grandmother.

The first is a 'Funeral' notice and appears in column 4 of page 12, The Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday, 12th March 1932.

The second search result is an 'In Memorium' notice which appears in column 3, page 12, The Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday, 11th March 1933.

serted bv J Brown and children Drummoyne.

There was another notice in Trove, that does not actually show Elizabeth's name. However, it is a 'Return Thanks' notice from the family and appears in column 2 of page 8, The Sydney Morning Herald on Tuesday 15 March 1932 -

RETURN THANKS.

JOHN MULHOLLAND and FAMILY of 47 Vic-
toria road Drummoyne express their sincere
THANKS to kind friends and neighbours for ex-
pressions of sympathy, floral tributes and cards
in their recent sad bereavement.

Whilst I did not find many newspaper articles about my great grandmother, I am happy that I have at least found these.

Remembering Private Robert P Mulholland, No. 7395, 8th Bn. Royal Scots

It has been quite a while since I have written here, sometimes life gets busy and other events take priority.

I have recently written two posts over on my We Will Remember Them WW1 blog. One of the posts is about my great grandfather's (John Mulholland) nephew - Private Robert P Mulholland who was  killed in action on 16 May 1915.

Click here and to read about Robert, some of the poems that he wrote and see some photos of my visit to the Le Touret Memorial and Military Cemetery.   Robert is listed on one of the memorial panels under the Royal Scots as a Private - Mulholland R.

The Le Touret Memorial commemorates many soldiers killed in action who have no known grave.
